The export of 170,000 metric tonnes of Non-Basmati white rice to Malaysia has been authorized, according to a statement made by the Indian government yesterday. This is a special gesture of friendship between India and Malaysia.

This is in response to the Malaysian government’s request for the allocation of a special quota of white rice on a government-to-government basis and in light of the two countries’ strengthened strategic partnership as well as their close bilateral ties in the food and agriculture sectors.
Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s minister for external affairs, informed his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, via phone call yesterday that the Indian Government had decided to permit a special allocation of white rice to Malaysia.
In view of the ongoing situation in Malaysia, Zambry expressed his appreciation to Dr. S.Jaishankar and the Indian Government for extending their support.
Rice Export Policy In India
According to Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, minister of agriculture and food security, discussions regarding issues over India’s rice export restrictions have taken place between government officials from Malaysia and India.
Additionally, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the situation.
The biggest exporter of rice in the world, India, earlier this year banned the export of non-Basmati white rice and imposed a 20% tax duty on exports of parboiled rice in an effort to protect its domestic supply.
Additionally, despite the current ban, it was revealed yesterday that seven countries were given an exemption to import white rice from India.
The other six nations are Nepal, the Philippines, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Republic of Guinea, and Seychelles, in addition to Malaysia.
India had authorized the export of rice to Bhutan, Mauritius, and Singapore in August.
